Read This if You're Bored

Updated: Jan 12, 2021

Enagaged employees improve company performance. You know that already right...Well, now it's time to figure out if your employees are bored before it's too late.

One in three employees cite boredom as their main reason to leave a job. Without a sense of purpose, employees will underperform and, likely, leave. Time to change this!

Work is more often a source of frustration than one of fulfillment for nearly 90% of the world’s workers.

Why work? Sure, there’s this thing called money, yet when you ask people who are fulfilled by their work why they do what they do, money almost never comes up. At XpandCulture, we try not to overthink the formula...we think it’s pretty easy: If you like work, you feel engaged.

You see where this is going, right? If you are engaged at work, you are more productive, if you are more productive...probably no need to continue...you get it.

The challenge rests in how to create an engaging culture. According to Gallup, work is more often a source of frustration than one of fulfillment for nearly 90% of the world’s workers. In employee surveys, employees want to do their best and to feel like they should invest the effort. Employees want to be encouraged, to develop and learn, to feel appreciated by coworkers and supervisors, to feel that their opinions count, to feel that their work is important, and to have good friends at work.

We frame employee desires in two words: purpose and meaning. Purpose applies to the individual worker - and can include social and emotional connections as well as being part of something bigger than themselves. Meaning touches on the external impact - what is the company doing? If an employees see themselves as an integral part of the larger purpose, well then, work may not feel like work.

Armed with this basic understanding, it is incumbent upon companies to create a culture that empowers every employee, provides autonomy, and affords discretion. The employees must feel that they are part of a team working for a defined goal. XpandCulture helps to track and measure how employees feel. Our 4-click feedback model invites the employees to share their feelings (purpose), and the company's alignment with its core values (meaning).

The ability to track and measure the company’s alignment with its core values (the company’s why) is vital to culture crediblity. Add the ability for employees to share direct feedback among peers and managers, the company gains the 360 degree view of the employees’ impact and vital role on the team - highlighting the individual’s purpose within the greater meaning.

Alright...too easy. We know that people are not equations. Each day brings different reactions and sentiments. Life is, well, life. XC doesn’t shy away from this complexity. XC, steeped in positive organizational behavior, is expanding its features to provide coaching to empower peers and managers to respond to the variables that life delivers. XC is driving profit: both personally and professionally.
